What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants refer to small, titanium posts that can be surgically placed beneath the gumline, directly into the jawbone. They’re capable of fusing with the bone tissue and forming a permanent bond, much like a natural tooth root. From there, a custom-made dental restoration can be attached to the top of the post (or posts if numerous teeth are being replaced). It receives incredible support that allows it to function naturally.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

- Initial Consultation – You’ll first meet with Dr. Al to discuss your implant candidacy. Patients must have sufficient jawbone density and be in adequate oral health before they can move forward with dental implants.
- Dental Implant Surgery – Dr. Al can place dental implants himself right here in our Helena office, meaning you won’t have to coordinate with other teams. Anywhere from one or more dental implant posts can be used, depending on the number of missing teeth.
- Osseointegration/Abutment – Over the next several months, your implants will need time to fuse with your jaw to form a permanent bond (osseointegration). Once this has happened, you’ll come back to receive your abutments, which are placed on top of the posts and connect to your replacement teeth.
- Delivery of Final Restoration – Your custom-made restoration may come in the form of a crown, bridge, or denture, depending on your needs. In any case, once it’s attached to the implant posts, it immediately receives support and will look, feel, and function just like natural teeth.
Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants don’t just restore the gaps in your smile; they also come with numerous long-term benefits, including:
- Dental implants restore most of your original bite force, meaning you can easily enjoy a varied diet that wouldn’t be possible with traditional restorations.
- They prevent the bone loss and shrinkage that occurs in the jaw following tooth loss, dramatically lowering your risk for future complications while maintaining a healthy, youthful appearance.
- With the right care, dental implants have the potential to last for decades or even a lifetime.
Who Dental Implants Can Help

One of the biggest benefits of dental implants is their customizability; they can help patients with one missing tooth, a few missing teeth, or even those without any natural teeth remaining! There are also All-on-X dental implants, which rely on using a few strategically placed implant posts to bring back an entire row of teeth in as little as one appointment.
